Rooted in Orillia: Brent Maw’s Mission to Restore Nature After the Storm

— by Kelsey Moore

Brent Maw isn’t just in the business of trees, he’s rooted in them. A certified Ontario and Utility Arborist with over 12 years of experience, Brent founded Horizon Tree Company in 2023, bringing his deep respect for the land into every job. Born and raised in Orillia, his love for the outdoors started early—riding alongside his grandfather in Muskoka as he logged with horses, and later gaining hands-on experience and pursuing further education in the field.

In March 2025, Orillia, among many other surrounding townships, experienced a devastating ice storm that left the community grappling with widespread damage. The City of Orillia declared a state of emergency to manage the crisis, the hazardous conditions, and to focus on restoring safety and services to its residents.

Local arborist Brent Maw has been at the forefront of the recovery efforts, assessing and addressing the storm’s impact on Orillia’s green spaces.

In the wake of Orillia’s horrendous ice storm, Brent’s approach is proving vital. His recent storm recovery work throughout the community included not only cleanup, but thoughtful restoration, especially when it came to removing ash trees compromised by the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive species that has devastated Ontario forests.

“When you remove the damaged ash, it creates space and light for healthier species to thrive,” Brent said. He advocates for planting resilient trees like red and white oaks, and supports selective forestry, where strategic removals enhance safety and support future growth.

His work has been instrumental in the cleanup and restoration of key community areas. For Brent, arboriculture is about more than just cutting down trees—it’s about making thoughtful decisions that preserve the health of the ecosystem. “If a tree has less than 50% damage, we try to save it,” he explained. “But saving a tree means maintaining it regularly, removing dead wood, clearing new growth, and keeping the canopy healthy.”

His message to homeowners is clear: “Consult an arborist. Understand what’s in your yard, how healthy it is, and what you can plant to support your environment. Even simple maintenance every three to five years can extend a tree’s life significantly.”

Brent’s commitment to the community is evident in his meticulous approach to tree care and his dedication to educating residents about the importance of preserving natural spaces. He believes that knowledge is power and that informed decisions are crucial for the long-term health of Orillia’s and any area’s environment. Through his work, Brent aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the role of arborists and the significance of proactive environmental stewardship.

As Orillia continues to recover from the ice storm, the efforts of professionals like Brent Maw and his team serve as a testament to the resilience and unity of the community. His passion for nature and dedication to maintaining the integrity of local habitats ensure that Orillia’s green spaces will continue to thrive for generations to come.
