A New Beginning
—by Wanda Minnings
Melissa’s journey began with a need to rediscover herself. After experiencing trauma, she realized that she wasn’t the same person she once was. She was looking for a path in her life to overcome some dark times and emerge stronger. Her life took a significant turn when she volunteered with Team Rubicon’s disaster response team and met a girl who had competed in the Invictus Games in 2017. Inspired by her story, Melissa applied to the Invictus Games, though she initially felt undeserving.
However, Melissa soon learned that the Invictus Games welcome competitors with various disabilities, and she qualified to be part of the Canadian Invictus Team! The Invictus Games aim to support recovery journeys, whether physical, mental, or both.
Training for the February 2025 Games was a year-long endeavor, and Melissa’s daughter summed up their experience perfectly: “We have a new life!” One of the most memorable moments for Melissa was walking into the pool to compete while feeling sick and discouraged. A timely ‘good news’ notification from her lawyer about a family issue brought an emotional and impactful moment, shared with her daughter and supported by her team friends.

The Games were a source of inspiration, and Melissa plans to continue skiing, possibly racing, and coaching. She is building on the lessons and experiences gained from the Games. Coming home after the Games was a mental high, and Melissa is staying connected with True Patriot Love and the Invictus Games Foundation, participating in marathons and races, sometimes virtually.
Melissa’s journey has also impacted her family. Her daughter had a spontaneous moment with Prince Harry and Meghan at the opening dinner for Invictus, proudly presenting them with a Canadian flag. Melissa’s partner and his son have become part of her home team, participating with her in the sports she trained for and continuing to do so as a family.
Looking ahead, Melissa has exciting plans, including another triathlon, cycling from Vancouver to Whistler, and an adventure race in Angus. Her involvement with Invictus has not only transformed her life but also inspired her family to grow and participate in her journey.
