Friends of Sugarbush

Founded in 2003, Friends of Sugarbush is a vibrant, community-driven organization that has become a cornerstone of local events and initiatives in the area. Rooted in a deep love for the natural beauty of the Horseshoe Valley region, this group of passionate volunteers has worked tirelessly over the years to create memorable experiences that bring people together. With a mission to foster a sense of belonging, connection, and enjoyment for all ages, Friends of Sugarbush has grown into a cherished part of the community.

One of the most highly anticipated events organized by the group is the Family Day Cardboard Toboggan Race. Now in its 14th year, this annual race has grown to become the largest Family Day event in Simcoe County, attracting families, friends, and community members of all ages. Held on Family Day, this fun-filled event features participants of all skill levels racing homemade cardboard toboggans down a snow-covered hill, competing for the coveted title of fastest toboggan and best decorated. Beyond the thrill of the race itself, the event has become a beloved tradition, offering a chance for the community to come together and celebrate the joy of winter.

While the Cardboard Toboggan Race is the highlight of the year, Friends of Sugarbush is active year-round, hosting a variety of events that cater to different interests and age groups. One such event is Fall Fest, a beloved autumn tradition that kicks off the season in style. The highlight of Fall Fest is the Bike Parade, where children decorate their bicycles in themed decorations and parade through Sweetwater Park. This event fosters creativity, fun, and a strong sense of community spirit.

In addition to Fall Fest, Friends of Sugarbush also hosts Movie Night in the Park. This event brings families together on warm summer evenings for an outdoor movie under the stars. With a projector and large screen set up in a local park, moviegoers enjoy family-friendly films while surrounded by the beauty of nature. It’s a wonderful way for residents to unwind, connect with neighbors, and experience the magic of cinema in an outdoor setting.

Another favourite event is Water Night, held in collaboration with the Oro-Medonte Fire Fighters. This event focuses on helping the community cool down on a hot summer night. Kids and adults alike can take turns running through the water hose. It’s an opportunity for parents and children alike to interact with first responders, and build a stronger bond with the community.

Through these diverse events, Friends of Sugarbush continues to build a thriving, connected community where families and individuals of all backgrounds can come together and make lasting memories. The group’s dedication to creating inclusive, fun, and meaningful experiences is a testament to the power of volunteerism and community spirit. As the organization looks forward to its biggest event of the year, the Family Day Cardboard Toboggan Race, it’s clear that Friends of Sugarbush will continue to be a driving force in bringing joy, connection, and excitement to the residents of Simcoe County for many years to come.
