Family Day Mayhem:
Ideas for family fun
right here in North Simcoe

February’s Family Day long weekend is the perfect reminder that you don’t have to travel far or spend much money to make meaningful family memories. February 14, 15 and 16, 2026 are the days to mark on your calendar. This weekend allows for the double dip of family festivus, mixed with the love of Valentine’s Day. North Simcoe offers plenty of winter adventures that keep kids active, parents relaxed, and everyone connected, even in the coldest month of the year. February can be a bit of a downer for some, so may this Family Day be a welcomed opportunity to mark something on the calendar and look forward to some fun! This will help get us to March Break and beat the winter blues.

Outdoor Fun for All Ages
Winter in North Simcoe shines when families embrace the snow. Local parks and trail systems transform into playgrounds for sledding, snowshoeing, and winter hiking. Family-friendly trails in our region are perfect for little legs and first-time snowshoers. Pack a thermos of hot chocolate and turn a simple walk into a mini adventure.

Tobogganing remains a Family Day classic. Many communities maintain popular hills that are free to use and easy to access, making them perfect for spontaneous outings that don’t require advance planning.

Free and Low-Cost Community Events
Family Day often comes with special programming hosted by the local libraries and community centres. From drop-in skating sessions and swim times to craft workshops and movie afternoons, these events are designed to be welcoming and budget-friendly. They may also be Valentine’s Day themed as well.

Be sure to check out the social media pages and websites for specific details, but this is just a reminder to keep this on your radar. We love all the fun the Orillia Public Library offers and can’t say no to a sponsored, free skate at the rink!

Indoor Escapes from the Cold
When the weather doesn’t cooperate, it is okay to stay put. When at home, you can enjoy some family board games, puzzles and colouring together. Host a movie marathon. Stay in your jammies all day. Do some Valentine’s Day crafts or deliver some baking to family nearby. These special moments can be turned into core memories whenever you’re just together!

Mini Day Trips with Big Impact
A short drive can make the day feel extra special. Exploring a nearby waterfront town, grabbing lunch at a family-friendly restaurant, or visiting a local farm or nature centre adds a sense of adventure without the stress of long travel. These small excursions help kids see their own region through fresh eyes. Check out the Wye Marsh or Sainte-Marie Among the Huron to see what they are up to this Family Day weekend.

 Making It Meaningful
Family Day doesn’t have to be packed with activities to be memorable. Sometimes the best moments come from slowing down and simply spending uninterrupted time together.

The best Family Day experiences are waiting right outside (or maybe inside) your front door!

Happy Valentine’s Day and Family Day Weekend!
