Eady Updates
—by Bonnie Smith
I don’t know whether anyone else feels water-logged this summer, but I sure do! Our weather has been extremely wet in this part of the province this year and it doesn’t seem to want to quit. Recently, when it rained over 80 mm in a 24 hour period, I didn’t think we would ever dry out. However, we did, and then we got wet, once again, the next day and again the next day. This has been the pattern for pretty much all of our summer.
Between the rain and the very humid weather, it sure has not been great for those on vacation, for our many local farmers who are trying to get their hay crops off, for those working on any type of construction, or for anyone else who is weather dependent for their work. Let’s hope that we have a change in the weather pattern soon and have a “nice” summer going forward!
The Eady-Wesley United Church recently held its annual take-out strawberry festival on June 26th. Once again, a delicious supper was had by all who attended.
The strawberry season was quite short this year due to all the rain, so hopefully you were able to get out in between the days of rain and pick a few strawberries to either eat, freeze, or make jam. The raspberry crops look like they are going to do well this year; they must like the rain! However, I hear that the blueberry crop may be a short season as well.
Our sympathies are extended to Jim Curtis and family on the death of Jim’s wife, Rev. Sue Curtis in late June. Sue has been an assistant minister at St. George Anglican Church, Fairvalley for several years. Sue was also a great photographer, focusing on nature scenes and building structures. She will be missed greatly by her many friends and parishioners.
A new “orchard-to-glass” cidery has recently come to fruition in our area. Woodfolk Cider, who currently have two ciders available, hope to have up to ten new varieties by the end of 2024. Over 56 varieties of apples to be used for the ciders are being grown on the owners’ farm. The owners hope to open a shop by next spring so that people can visit and pick up some ciders to try out. In the meantime, you currently might find some of their product at the local markets. Check out the Woodfolk Cider website for more information. We wish Woodfolk Cider all the very best in their new adventure!
As usual, there are lots of summer activities in the area for you to partake in without having to drive too far. From summer markets, Sunday evening band concerts at Couchiching Beach Park, stopping by Quayle’s Brewery to try one of their many varieties of beer and partake in one of their numerous activities, to golfing at one of the many golf courses in our area…there is always something to do and enjoy. I hope that you are getting some time to relax, sit back and enjoy some of these fun activities too!
The Eady Community Hall Board has recently delivered questionnaires to many of the Eady and neighbouring residents asking for their input into helping to identify activities and program ideas that they would like to see being held in our community hall. If you have received one of these questionnaires, please be sure to return it by August 2. Your input and ideas are appreciated and will help determine future events at the community hall.
Just a reminder that the Eady Community Hall is also available again for daily and regular rentals. For more information and to inquire about rates and availability, please email eadycommunityhall@gmail.com; call Bonnie at 705-835-0006, or call Oro-Medonte Township at 705-487-2171, ext. 2133 (Hall rentals).
Again, a reminder if you have anything you would like to share with our readers, e.g. a special celebration, a vacation that you took with your family, or an upcoming event that you would like mentioned in this column, please contact me at 705-835-0006. Our Eady readers, along with readers from our surrounding communities would love to hear from you!
I hope that the remainder of your summer is a safe and happy one!
