Community Hero:
Bruce Chappell

—by Hillary Handy

Bruce Chappell is a dad, grandfather and a lifelong farmer. You’ve driven past his family’s farm, aptly named Chappell Farm, many times. Located on Penetanguishene Road where Barrie blends into Oro-Medonte, this family farm has been in existence for generations, since 1834.

It is an agritourist destination during 3 of the 4 seasons, but during pumpkin season, it is prime time for spooky fun. The property boasts a petting zoo, fun farm, wagon rides and mini train and thematic content that changes with the holidays and seasons.

The farm is open to schools for field trips and most recently, is the new home of the Oro-Medonte Farmer’s Market that happens every Thursday from 12 to 6 pm in the summer. This new location has been a blessing for the Oro-Medonte community and Township as well as an opportunity for more people to check out the farm! But Bruce is more than just a farmer…his love for this community is evident.

Bruce is also one of the Co-Founders of the Oro-Medonte Chamber of Commerce, so it was only telling that he would help facilitate a smooth transition to the new site of the Farmer’s Market.

Bruce volunteered for the chamber for years, as well as kept busy farming, and with lots of other volunteering in the community. His heart and love for the community and his family is evident in everything he has done for all of us.

The family also stepped up to be the host site for the 18th Relay for Life in 2018. They have also hosted Art N Soul exhibits among other community events on the property. These are just small ways they show up for their community in a big way!

His wife Pauline was recognized as Senior of the Year in 2023 with the Township of Oro-Medonte. It is only fitting now that he bears that title as well. The two are a dynamic duo who have worked so hard to positively shape our community.

For these reasons and more, we would like to recognize Bruce Chappell as this issue’s Community Hero at North Simcoe Life. We are thankful to have upstanding men like Bruce in our community, making it a better place for all but particularly the next generation.

Do you know someone who is pretty awesome and deserves some recognition? We would love to tell their story! Send us an email at info@northsimcoe.life.
