Coldwater Communique

— Lois Rooney-Giurin

Coldwater becomes a magical village during the Christmas season.
Lovely shops, great decorations and a real “Hallmark movie” vibe is what you find here.

In the holiday season that just passed, we enjoyed watching our beautiful tree lighting, and the Santa Claus parade which was a load of fun. The annual Lions Free Skate and Fireworks show on New Year’s Eve finished the year in style! And the hot chocolate flowed freely (and free) for most events.

Coldwater is now in its “slower” winter season now. Several businesses have been shut down while the proprietors took well-deserved vacations, but everyone seems to be back now and open for business!

Even in the slower season, Coldwater is a happening place.

The Lions have some events coming up.
The Lions’ annual curling bonspiel is on February 7.

On February 21, at 1 p.m., there will be a macrame craft afternoon, led by Jennifer Dawney. Details are still being worked out, but this is always a popular one!

The following Saturday, February 28, the library welcomes Wendy McQuaig, author of “Behind the Pickle Jar”. This extremely popular book has sold several thousand copies. This event is free and everyone is welcome. Support Local Authors!

March Break at the Library will have several wonderful treats this year. Gorgon Grove will be showing live snakes and providing information on reptiles as pets.

Woodstock Wellness Aviary will also have an afternoon with an opportunity to meet live birds and find out about these amazing creatures.

James Bennett, falconer, will be there one day with his birds and talk about the art of falconry.

Other programs will include slime, as always, and a surprise program!

There are also two author events planned.

March 22, Claire Ross Dunn, a Toronto author, screenwriter, story editor, playwright and producer, will talk about her first novel, “At Last Count”, and her upcoming book, “Lost in France”. She has co-written two non-fiction books as well. This will take place at 1 p.m. All are welcome and the event is free.

On March 28, another local author, Mike Walton, will be here to talk about his adrenaline-filled series “Apok”. Michael Walton, as a police officer, has been part of multiple investigative teams, chasing criminals involved in murder, gun trafficking, drug trafficking and multi-million-dollar frauds.  As always, all are welcome to this free event beginning at 1 p.m.

The Township of Severn is offering some March Break Programming in Coldwater as well.
