Warminster
Write-Up

— by Hillary Handy

Warminster survived the lingering effects of the several snowmageddons this winter season. What a time to be alive. Snowbanks towering on the streets made for tricky driving and reduced visibility, but great tobogganing for the little ones as they waited for their buses…when they weren’t cancelled. There was a record-breaking number of Snow Days this year. There were 9 across the whole county, but particularly in the North Zone, there were 20 bus cancellations at the time of this article submission…I think. We lose track of time when trapped indoors! What a wild winter, indeed.

One of our local students, Emily Horne, is headed to Burgos, Spain for the World Dance Cup 2025. Her dance team is headed there July 2 to 13. The team has been practicing like crazy, while raising funds to offset the cost of their trip with Pancake Supper and Silent Auction events. The cost for each dancer to attend is approximately $6,200. They are making great progress, but still have some work to do! Ongoing, the team is doing a Bottle Drive to help raise funds and some other events are coming up. If you’re a small business who is interested in supporting the girls, please connect with their parents via the Facebook group “Dancing to Spain”.

In school news, there have been some staffing changes over the winter months, resulting in some new members joining the team, but leaving students missing those who have moved onto other locations. We wanted to extend some special retirement wishes to Beth Kudar, who has served 26 years at Warminster Elementary School, primarily as a Special Education Resource Teacher.

Ms. Kudar and Mrs. Alexander now enjoying retirement together

From Beth’s long-standing work with the Terry Fox Run, track and field, Girlstrong, Community Pitch-In, Writing Club and more, her passion for teaching and for student success is so evident. She views teaching as more than just a job and offered her students enriching opportunities. She has a love for positive affirmations, fostering a positive sense of self in her students. Students (and even those who worked alongside her) are often caught singing some of those sentiments shared in class. Her impact and legacy lives on, but her presence will surely be missed. Enjoy your retirement, Ms. Kudar! Thank you for all your many years of dedication to our community and students!

Children at Warminster Elementary School enjoyed attending a Valentine’s Day Dance (although postponed due to the many snow days this school year) as well as a St. Patrick’s Day Dance. The Grade 8s are working hard to organize these events in support of their upcoming Graduation Trip. Two snow days blended into March Break, with students returning fresh and eager to learn after the highly anticipated weeklong break.

The Terra Cotta Cookie fundraiser was amazing at Warminster! School Council was able to raise $1000 and everyone was able to bake up some delicious cookies. Many thanks to those who purchased cookies in support of the school. Council fundraising efforts have been used for several projects, one of which is updating individual classroom libraries with new texts. This allows for students to develop a joy of reading during free time.

The Spring Vendor Market spaces are all sold out, which means this will be a fantastic event. Be sure to come and shop on May 10 to find the perfect gift for Mom in time for Mother’s Day. Then keep on travelling West to check out Quayles Brewery Spring Market.

Warminster Soccer is starting up after the May Long Weekend! This program is a staple to our little community. Many thanks to all those who volunteer on the Executive Committee who coordinate all the logistics. If you are able to help in a coaching role, please let them know. This is a great option for high school students or those needing additional community involvement on their resumes.  For all the happenings, check out the “Warminster Soccer Club” page on Facebook.

Warminster is starting to thaw and we are here for it! More to come as it happens!
