Why the Holidays
Change the Way
We Think About Home
by Amanda Potter – Mortgage Agent Level One
Every year, as the holidays roll in, something subtle but powerful happens: our homes begin to feel different. Maybe it’s the glow of lights in the windows, the scent of baking, the sound of familiar songs, or just the rhythm of people coming and going. But there’s no other season that makes us reflect on our homes quite the way the holidays do.
During most of the year, life is busy. We move through our spaces on autopilot—rush out the door, toss bags on the counter, fold laundry between errands, repeat. But the holidays slow us down just enough to notice things we often overlook. We pay attention to how our home feels rather than how it functions.
It’s when we pull the decorations out of storage that we see the charm in our little traditions: the handmade ornament from years ago, the slightly crooked wreath we keep hanging anyway, the box of old holiday cards that always makes us smile. These small rituals transform a house into a living scrapbook of our lives.
And with family and friends coming through the door—sometimes in waves—we start to see our home through fresh eyes. Suddenly the cozy living room feels even cozier. The kitchen becomes the heart of everything, filled with laughter, food, and conversations that run later than they should. Even the simplest room can take on a kind of magic when it’s filled with people we love.
But this season also has a gentle way of revealing what we’d like to change. Maybe the guest room feels a bit cramped, or we wish we had more seating when everyone’s gathered around the tree. Maybe the layout makes hosting harder than it needs to be. Sometimes it’s just the realization that more space, better storage, or a brighter kitchen would make the holidays run a little smoother—and the months that follow, too.
As a mortgage professional, I hear these reflections from homeowners all the time, especially this time of year. Not because they’re looking to buy or sell, but because the holidays shine a light on how we truly live in our homes. They remind us of what matters: comfort, connection, warmth, and the little details that make a space feel like ours.
The truth is, home is never just a structure. It’s where we welcome people in, where memories are made, and where traditions find their place year after year. The holidays bring that into focus. They help us appreciate what we have—and imagine what might make it even better.
So, if you find yourself standing in your living room this season, taking in the glow and thinking about the year ahead, know that it’s completely natural. The holidays aren’t just a celebration—they’re a gentle nudge to dream, reflect, and envision the home life you truly want.
