Coldwater Spring Events and Happenings Communique

by Lois Rooney-Giurin

Coldwater has been busier than you’d expect during the early part of 2024.

The Frosty Funfest on October 17 was a fun event as promised and the weather was somewhat frostier this year than last. We look forward to the 2025 version!

The Library has been busy with author visits and craft days, in addition to its usual workings. Theresa Fama came on January 21 to speak about her book “Who knew? Growing up in Thunder Bay Beach”. Her talk was inspiring for all who came.

Bruce Hanson presented his latest book “Murder and Other Love Stories” on February 3. Bruce just keeps on surprising us as a writer. Can’t wait for your next one, Bruce!

Our February 29 author was Robert Rotenberg, author of seven mystery novels set in Toronto. His latest, “What we Buried” is headed for the bestseller list. A terrific read, and a wonderful presentation by a very talented and popular author.

March 11 saw a visit to the library by Terry Fallis, Leacock Award-winning author. He spoke about his latest book, “A New Season”, which is a departure from his usual novels. We were very excited to have him with us.

Still to come are:  Rachel Stone, author of “The Blue Iris” on April 20 at 1 pm, Wendy McQuaig, who wrote “Behind the Pickle Jar” is coming on May 11 at 1 pm, and Bob Graham, Storyteller and author of “Cecil Stories” will entertain us on June 8 at 1 pm.

The next big town event will be the Duck Race on May 25 – tickets will be available soon and if last year’s list was any indication, the prizes will be excellent. June 1 will be another big day, as the village holds its garage sale. Lots of bargains and food – don’t miss out!

The May 17 Militia Group re-enactment kicks off the Coldwater Canadiana Museum’s season with daily opening times of 10 am to 4 pm starting May 18.

The Coldwater Studio Tour and Vintage Tractors and Equipment display are on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, 2024.

Don’t miss the Coldwater Mill’s Farmer’s Market, every Friday from 3 pm to 7 pm, starting in June.

More changes are happening on Main Street! The Red Shed has moved to an online format for now but will re-open in a different location. Contact them on their Facebook page to get your favourite products.

As always, please support the Food Bank at Coldwater United Church, and the Caring Closet at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian. Your donations are appreciated.

Happy Easter all!

Warminster School and Community Events and Write-Up

by Hillary Handy

Is it still winter? Is it Spring? Hard to say! What a strange wintery season we have had.

Warminster is starting to WARM up now. Registration for the highly anticipated and coveted Warminster Soccer League has come and gone. We are now just waiting for the snow to melt so it can be game time in May! This is such a fun community gathering every Wednesday!

We are still eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new ball hockey league scheduled to open THIS SUMMER! Xposed Ball Hockey League will be a wonderful asset to the community, offering recreational opportunities for children, youth and adults! This is probably the most exciting thing to happen around these parts in a longggg time!

In School News, Grade 8s are continuing their fundraising efforts for their year-end trip to Camp Muskoka. Other grades have been enjoying field trips to the Coldwater Bowling Alley, the Wye Marsh and Black River Wilderness Park. School Council is gearing up for a Spring Vendor Sale happening on April 27th. If you’re interested in participating as a vendor, please email Rebecca Harjupanula – harjupanula@yahoo.ca. You can be a crafter, artisan, baker, or even have a business in MLM. Proceeds to support school initiatives. This is also a great time to find the PERFECT gift for Mom in time for Mother’s Day!

Lastly, School Council is looking for Silent Auction donations for the upcoming annual Community BBQ happening on Thursday, June 6th! If you are interested in supporting our small school with big heart, please send me an email- hillaryhandy@gmail.com. This is an event for all ages and community members to attend. We would love to see you there!

More to come as it happens!
